Title: Executive Director, Simcoe and District Chamber of Commerce

Reports to: Board of Directors

Location: Simcoe, ON

Position Summary:

The Executive Director is responsible for the successful strategic leadership and management of the Simcoe and District Chamber of Commerce (SDCC). A community leader working in a hands-on capacity to oversee and implement plans and board directives and coordinate all operational aspects of SDCC.

Responsible and accountable to the Board of Directors for the leadership and day-to-day operations of SDCC, for operating within Board-approved By-laws and policies, and for developing and implementing business, financial, communication, marketing, human resources, advocacy plans and budgets.

The Executive Director is responsible for building and maintaining relationships with key stakeholders including representatives of federal, provincial and municipal government (both elected and non-elected), the Canadian and Ontario Chambers of Commerce, other local chambers, the media, local business leaders, suppliers, the business community, members and other stakeholders including volunteers and key partners of SDCC.

Key accountabilities:

Policy, Planning and Board Support

  • Work with the Board of Directors, taking a lead role in developing and executing on SDCC’s strategic plan, annual budget and sub-committees of the Board.
  • Develop and implement short and long-term objectives and strategic initiatives
  • Participate with the Board of Directors in developing a vision and strategic plan to guide the Chamber
  • Plan and direct programs and services that meet the short and long term objectives
  • Monitor the effectiveness of Chamber programs and services in relation to member needs
  • Ensure full and complete compliance with SDCC by-laws, policies and government regulations and statutes.
  • Ensure the integrity and viability of SDCC’s finances, including control of operating expenditures, monthly financial reviews and recommendations to the Board of Directors.

Operations and Management

  • Manage the day-to-day operations in consultation with the Board of Directors
  • Maintain an effective and efficient office environment
  • Coordinate and direct staff, as applicable, and ensure staffing is consistent with requirements and needs
  • Provide training and development for staff as required within budgetary framework
  • Conduct regular staff performance reviews and goal setting
  • Recruit, orient, and train staff in consultation with the board of directors
  • Maintain databases and records as needed to support all activities, including but not limited to, Membership, Communications, Advocacy, Events, Fundraising, and Board Activities, etc.
  • Ensure compliance with Employment standards, Bylaws, Legislative requirements, and other contracts.
  • Develop, plan, and execute special events including, but not limited to: Outstanding Achievement Awards, Springarama, Breakfast with the Mayor, Business after 5, festivals and the arts, etc. to ensure the achievement of revenue targets and operational goals,

Financial Management

  • Develop, implement, and manage an annual operating budget in collaboration with the Board of Directors and board treasurer
  • Oversee all aspects of financial accounting and bookkeeping in collaboration with the bookkeeper and board treasurer
  • Assist with preparation for external financial statement review
  • Ensure accurate and timely monthly reporting to the Board of Directors
  • Establish and manage event and program budgets as needed and track and report on status
  • Establish revenue targets in consultation with the Board and work to increase revenue through increased membership, event attendance, and other fundraising efforts
  • Continuously explore and investigate funding opportunities, and submit applications on behalf of SDCC, as appropriate

Membership

  • Establish and maintain relationships with Membership, other Chambers and business associations
  • Actively promote the benefits of membership with the goal of recruiting new members each month.
  • Develop new initiatives to support membership engagement, retention, and attraction
  • Support existing programs and services and formulate new opportunities of direct interest to members
  • Engage members in volunteer and networking opportunities

Liaison & Engagement

  • Increase relevancy by maintaining a presence within the community
  • Build positive relationships with governmental and community partners; establish business advocacy channels
  • Hold and maintain memberships in various community clubs and organizations
  • Identify, develop, and maintain effective sponsorship opportunities and relationships
  • Participate in local, provincial and national chamber activities
  • Establish and maintain strong working relationships and collaborative arrangements with the membership, sponsors and other local chambers of commerce to help achieve strategic objectives
  • Present outreach, marketing and member development metrics to the Board of Directors, on a regular basis
  • Assist the Board of Directors in the development of:
  • Member value proposition
  • Marketing Plan
  • Retention Plan

Position requirements:

  • Post-secondary degree in business, public policy or related
  • Professional experience working with Chamber, a board of directors or other equivalent in a senior capacity
  • Demonstrated organizational, entrepreneurial, leadership and management ability
  • Adaptability: Demonstrate a willingness to be flexible, versatile and/or tolerant in a changing work environment while maintaining effectiveness and efficiency
  • Focus on Member Needs: Anticipate, understand, and respond to the needs of internal and external clients to meet or exceed their expectations within the organizational parameters.
  • Lead: Positively influence others to achieve results that are in the best interest of the organization.
  • Build Relationships: Establish and maintain positive working relationships with others, both internally and externally, to achieve the goals of the organization.
  • Think strategically: Assesses options and actions based on trends and conditions in the environment, and the vision and values of the organization
  • Experience in staff and volunteer management
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

Work remotely:

This position is customer facing and a presence both in the community and our office is important. That said, remote work is a possibility on a casual basis where the needs of the Chamber and the ED can both be met.
